Career Guidance and Professional Development

Faculty members in our department assist students with creating and maintaining professional resumes. These faculty members review these resumes and check for errors and suggest improvements. Resumes are thoroughly reviewed by the professor(s) in Engineering 460 (Capstone Design 1) as part of a class assignment. The faculty help students improve job interview skills by visiting with students individually during office hours and by helping them setup a mock interview through SFA's Center for Career and Professional Development. Students are required to meet with a faculty advisor one-on-one at least once each semester to discuss career plans as well as develop a list of courses for the next semester. Student in the capstone course are also required to attend college events that allow them to network with employers such as STEM Connection, CoSM Networking Night, or STEM Career and Internship Expo. All students are encouraged to attend these events.

Professors communicate with students about job opportunities and internships via their SFA Jacks email account and Facebook pages. These communications sometimes lead to student interactions with local companies. These interactions include site tours, research projects, and part time employment. Faculty members bring in guest speakers from industry for our weekly departmental seminars on Thursdays at 4pm in room 103 of the STEM building. Faculty advisors also assist students with applying to graduate schools and Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU).
